iLiKESQUiD - Especially long-armed squid (Magnapinnidae)

While I've been coming to terms with high concepts and embracing the ageing process the rest of the world has been getting on fine without me.

I rang in my 25th birthday anniversary by drinking wine and watching people read poems with my 2 elder brothers, and have since being watching Euro 2008 (boohoo Russia and Turkey yay Spain) and failing to keep my house in order.

There has been little noteworthy, although I have begun a moustache and an epic poem entitled 'The Trousers That Nobody Wears'.

Last night I had a dream that a Jewish family was very annoyed with me for romancing thier daughter, who was engaged to a well-to-do Jewish man. The altercation took place on a rather nice boat.

I turned to a book I was given yesterday by Rachel ("Success" 1,000 Dreams and Tea-Cup Readings) to search for the meaning of this:

"Dreaming of Jewish people is a sign of prosperity for Christians and others..."

and the boat?

"The arrival of a dear friend."

Great! So then I found out Keith and Zef are in town tomorrow, and my cheque's clearing. No Jewish princesses on the horizon yet though.

This morning I received a communication from a MySpace blog from one of my favourite contemporary metal bands, the bizarre and exciting purveyors of Californian post-metal, Giant Squid.

The blog post detailed a video produced by a worker from an oil rig of a long-armed squid - the deepest ever footage of this rarely-recorded beast, which has barely been known to humans for more than two decades.

It looks like a squid/jellyfish hybrid and is pretty much the sort of thing I'd expect to find in a Lovecraft novel if ever I were to read one.

Aside from the beauty of the video itself, it's nice to know that this band's murky, spaced-out sound comes from genuine life interests, and that singer/guitarist Aaron Gregory works in the San Francisco Aquarium of the Bay as a professional diver!
Mr. Gregory:

"Diving in to my many books at home, and with a little
cross reference with the old googles, I've determined
that it is belonging to the species of squid known as
Magnapinna, or Big Fin squid, though this one is more
commonly known as the Long Arm Squid. They get as big as
5 meters! Take special note of the depth! 7828ft. It's
not the first time one has been filmed, but it's
defnitely the deepest footage caught of one."

Who says nothing good comes of MySpace?
